China and Taiwan Hold First Direct Talks Since ’49

The first official talks between representatives of Taiwan and China were held from the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949 . This meeting is symbolic in reducing rivalry between the parties .
"Before today's meeting , it was hard to Imagine That Could cross- strait relations get to this point , " said Wang Yu -chi head of Taiwan 's Mainland Affairs Council .
Since President Ma Ying- jeou was elected the ties have strengthened. Trade has almost nearly quadrupled, and Chinese travelers to China has been higher than ever.
In 2010, the parties had signed an agreement through semiofficial agencies, the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement.
Last year President Xi Jinping of China said at the Asia - Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting that the political stalemate between China and Taiwan could not be postponed indefinitely.
